New Hazard Based Standard, IEC 62368-1 will soon replace IEC 60950 (Information Technology Equipment) and IEC 60065 (Audio Video)
On Jan. 10, 2010, IEC 62368-1 Ed 1.0: Audio/Video, Information and Communication Technology Equipment – Safety Requirements, was published as an International Standard. This new standard will replace the current standards for these product categories within the next three to four years. This new standard will move from the traditional, prescriptive approach to a new, hazard-based approach that emphasizes safety design in the early product development phase. UL is currently working on their version of the standard and it will be released shortly after the IEC version is fully adopted.
The Product Safety Zone is currently working on a guide that will simplify this standard (as it has done with IEC/UL/CSA 60950) and it will be available on this site as soon as it is finalized.
